Sisyrinchium Devon Skies
Sisyrinchium 'Devon Skies'
Little blue beauty

Neat little clumps of green leaves are good looking though out the year, then in spring and summer this charming plant is topped with lots of small, sky blue, beautiful flowers. The narrow foliage and compactness of Sisyrinchium ‘Devon Skies’ (it grows just 25cm high and wide) makes it perfect for growing in the foreground of bolder perennials or attractive foliage plants. This cold hardy sun lover looks superb with yellow flowers, such as the very free flowering dwarf daylily (Hemerocallis) ‘Stella Bella.

It’s classy with blue flowers too, which can range from simple violas to sophisticated honeywort (Cerinthe major). Plant a group of Sisyrinchium ‘Devon Skies’ and surround them with ground hugging, almost forever flowering Bacopa ‘Blue Showers’ and you will have a particularly pleasing scene. Similarly satisfying is a group of Sisyrinchium ‘Devon Skies’ in the foreground of smaller growing English lavenders such as ‘Foveaux Storm’ or ‘Violet Intrigue’. Or grow it with the exceptionally free flowering little Campanula ‘Resholdt’s Variety’ which keeps on going all summer

The blue flowers of Sisyrinchium ‘Devon Skies’ look good with grey foliage plants too. Tuck it in among the grey and cream of Yucca ‘Denby’s Dream’ or use it as an edging in front of the striking Euphorbia ‘Silver Swan’.

Its iris-like appearance makes it intriguing to grow in the foreground of, or among, dwarf bearded irises. Or grow it as a cool contrast to white flowers such as Armerias or Leucanthemum ‘Sparkles’.

When planted as an edging it can add a pleasing touch of formality and also helps with maintenance, preventing leaves and soil being spread onto paths by birds scratching.
